The Basis School of Sculpture & the Royal Danish Embassy in Israel announce the Hans Christian Andersen 200 Anniversary Art Medal Competition

Regulations
The 200 H. C. Andersen Art Medal competition wishes to pay homage to the great Danish writer, whose wonderful tales have been an endless source of inspiration for the visual and plastic arts. We are glad to join the worldwide celebration of Andersen's vast literary and critical work and unique personality.
The Medal
The medal should be a free interpretation of the theme of the competition, which is the life and work of Hans Christian Andersen.
The medal must be two-sided and submitted as a final product in any durable material
(metal, ceramics, glass, etc.).
Medals executed in perishable materials (wax, paper, plaster, etc.) will not be accepted.
The diameter or largest dimension of the medal when presented must not exceed 11 cm.
The medal must bear some kind of inscription.
There is no limit to the number of medals each artist may submit. Each medal should be submitted so as to enable display of obverse and reverse simultaneously, i.e. either two copies or two separate sides of the medal.

Registration will only be valid on receipt of the Registration Form.

Artists who registered to the competition but decide not to compete are requested to inform Basis School, as soon as possible, of the cancellation of their participation.
Submission of medals
Each medal must be accompanied by an e-mailed Information report for the catalogue, in English only, which should include:
1) the artist's Curriculum Vitae (no more than 20 lines, indispensable - for the catalogue).
2) a short description of the idea depicted in the medal (no more than 5 lines, optional - for the adjudication process).

Please note that the Information report will not be accepted unless submitted in English and sent by-email (not scanned). Any medal received without the C.V. information or with a report submitted in any other way will participate in the competition, but cannot be included in the catalogue.
The medal and the Information report must arrive at Basis School before 10/10/2005.
Any submissions arriving after this date or which do not comply with all the above conditions can not participate in the competition and will be returned immediately.

Prizes
Prizes will be awarded as follows:
First Prize: U.S.$2000
Innovation Prize: U.S.$1000
Participants Prize: U.S.$800
Entries deserving Special Mentions (up to 5 entries) will be awarded with certificates and books, but no monetary prize.
Adjudication
The judges panel will comprise:
1) A professional panel of nine artists and academics. The professional panel will vote for the First and Innovation prizes. Each member will have one vote.
2) A public Jury, including cultural leaders and public figures. The public Jury will vote for the First prize only. The public Jury as a whole will have two votes.
The names of the judges and their field of activity will be published by 10/1/2005.
3) An all-participants jury. The all-participants jury will vote for the Participants prize only.
The all-participants adjudication will be conducted by e-mailed vote.

Artists
Each participant is invited to vote on the 11/1/05 only. Votes effected before or after that date will be considered invalid. The artists vote will include the following:

E-mail address for participants vote will be published in the Basis School website on 10/20/05. Participants vote will be summarized after the two other Juries` decisions on the 11/10/05.
The adjudication process will be supervised by Ms. Kirsten Ezra, Vice-consul to the Royal Danish Embassy in Tel Aviv, and Mr. Beni Keren, Internal Controller of the Basis School of Sculpture non-profit organization.
The results of the competition will be announced on 12/15/2005 and will be forwarded, together with the catalogue, to all participants.
The Award ceremony will be hosted by the Royal Danish Embassy in Tel Aviv.
All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation and will be included in the catalogue.
Display of works
All the medals will be displayed at the Award Ceremony and a one month exhibition in Israel. Detailed information about the exhibition and the Award Ceremony will be forwarded at a later time, upon request.
Artist's rights
All artists' rights to the medals will be respected.
Medals that participate in the competition will be returned unless otherwise requested by the artist. Artists may decide to donate their work to the Basis School collection in which case the School will be allowed to make professional non-profitable use of the medals: publish them in catalogues or send them to further exhibitions. If the medal is used in another exhibition or in any publication, the catalogue or the publication will be forwarded to the artist.
Shipping of medals
The full cost of producing and shipping the medal to the Basis School must be met by the participant. It is recommended to send the medals by registered mail. Special deliveries will not be accepted unless dispatched "door to door" to the Basis School address with no additional costs to be covered by the receiver.
Basis School will not be responsible for the loss of works before their arrival to the School. Artists are advised to use registered mail and keep the registration receipt.
Works will be taxed by the Israeli Customs Authorities unless it is clearly declared in the shipping documentation at the country of origin that the medal is an original, signed sculpture, of no commercial value, sent to Israel only to be displayed in an exhibition and to participate in the competition. Failure to fulfill these instructions may end in dispute with the Customs Authorities, in which case the participant will be expected to pay the taxes so that his work can be released.
