XXXI FIDEM CONGRESS, Art Medal in a Global World

Deadline for medal reception: November 30th 2009

Exhibition: June 17th through August 29th 2010

The congress exhibition Art Medal in a Global World at Tampere Art Museum is open to the public between June 17th and August 29th 2010. The art medals displayed at the exhibition have been made after FIDEM XXX Colorado Springs 2007 and thus they represent the latest medals of the FIDEM member countries. The exhibition gives an excellent view of what is going on globally in medallic art today.

The maximum diameter of any medal that will be exhibited is 15 cm. If the diameter is greater, the medal is counted as two different works of art. It has been estimated that the total number of art medals is about 800, the number of sides of medals between 1,500 and 1,700. The national quotas of each country will be confirmed by the delegates' meeting in Tampere in June 2009. The exhibition has no particular theme, which means that the artists may choose their motifs freely.

The exhibition fee including the catalogue is 40 euros and without the catalogue 20 euros.

The deadline for all the medals to reach Tampere for the FIDEM XXXI exhibition is November 30th 2009. Each artist should submit a Submission form including information on the artist and shipping information. Each medal must be accompanied by the name and address of the artist and the title of the work (Inventory form). The medals should be sent to:

The catalogue will be mainly in Finnish and English, but e.g. the introductions of each participating country covering the latest national events will be in English and in French. The information package will be most updated and circumstantial.

Since the number of pictures published is limited, every catalogue will contain a DVD diskette with a complete gallery of the medals displayed.

About Tampere Art Museum - the Scene of FIDEM XXXI Exhibition

Tampere Art Museum was founded in 1931 and is maintained by the City of Tampere. Its collections consist of about 14,000 works of art, an important part of which is the collection of art medals perpetually deposited in the museum by the Guild of Medallic Art of Finland. This collection gives a representative picture of modern Finnish medallic art. The museum was originally designed by C.L.Engel, the architect, as a granary at Pyynikki Square. The museum is well within a walking distance from Tampere Hall, but bus transport will be arranged when needed.

FIDEM, the International Medal Federation, was established in 1937. Its aims are to promote and diffuse the art of medals at international level, to make the art known and to guarantee recognition of its place among other arts by increasing awareness of the art, history and technology or medals, mainly through publications and the organisation of international events. FIDEM also organises a congress every two years and an international exhibition of the art of medals in order to promote exchanges among artists and to make their work known internationally.

FIDEM operates in over 30 countries worldwide. It is represented by a delegate and a vice-delegate in every country, who maintain regular contact with the artists, FIDEM members and other people interested in the art of medals from their own country.
