New Ideas in Medallic Sculpture
December 15, 2001 - May 15, 2002
The fourth annual exhibition, New Ideas in Medallic Sculpture, is organized and curated by Mashiko Nakashima, director of Medialia
Rack and Hamper Gallery, a Manhattan-based gallery that focuses on medallic sculpture, book arts, and small scale works, offering original artwork at affordable prices. Medialia has represented international artists since 1992.
The current exhibition is a joint event that gathers works from students from The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, and Burg Giebichenstein-Hochschule für Kunst und Design Halle.
Medialia is very proud that "New Ideas in Medallic Sculpture" has become an annual gallery event beginning in 1998, to encourage the younger generation to express ideas in medallic sculpture. Exhibitions comprised of works by a young generation of medallic sculptors have been an essential part of Medialia's philosophy since the beginnings of the gallery.
Mashiko, who is a professor of sculpture at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, created this annual event to encourage students to become more involved with art on a professional level.
"New Ideas" is now a three university exhibition, following a new direction that will give more dynamic stimulus to emerging artists. We must also give credit to Professor João Duarte, from the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, for his devotion and creative approach in guiding a new generation in the medallic sculpture world in Portugal, as well as to Professor Bernd Göbel, head of the sculpture department at the Burg Giebichenstein-Hochschule für Kunst und Design Halle, and recipent of the 2000 Saltus Award.
